Reinventing Yourself After a Divorce

Reinventing Yourself After a Divorce

You have probably heard the stories about people feeling depressed and angry after a divorce. It happens often. A divorce is a stressful and expensive process. It takes a lot out of a person physically and mentally. The process is exhausting and it can take a toll on a person, even a person who can normally handle a lot.

A divorce comes with many downsides, but it also has many advantages. It allows you the freedom to do things that you probably could not do while you were married. You can live life by your own rules and do the things that you have always wanted to do, but could not because you were in a relationship.

After a divorce, you will appreciate the freedom you will have. You will have more “me time” and opportunities to explore your interests. This can help you reinvent yourself after a divorce.

Many people get stuck in the drama of their divorce, but they need to move forward in order to thrive after a divorce. And moving forward starts with focusing on yourself.

This is harder than you think. While some people are naturally selfish and able to focus on themselves, many people have a hard time focusing on themselves. Their spouses and children may come first in their lives.

After a divorce, though, it is time to reinvent yourself. It is time to do the things you enjoy and focus on one person: you. How do you do that? Here are some tips to kick the habit of being married and start a new adventure.

Thriving After Divorce

Ready to start anew after the end of a marriage? Here are some tips to shake off the bad vibes that come with a divorce and live a brand new life.

  • Take time for yourself every day. We lead busy lives, and if you are now a single parent, you may have little time for yourself. However, taking time for yourself every day is important. You do not need to spend hours. Even just 10 minutes during lunch time or at the end of a busy day can make a world of difference. Spend time watching TV, reading a book, or taking a relaxing bath.

  • Make a change. After your divorce, start a new life with a new appearance. This does not have to be anything drastic. It can be as extreme as a new wardrobe or hairstyle or maybe just a manicure or pedicure to boost your mood.

  • Take a class or join a group. It is a good idea to meet new people after a divorce. Doing so can help ward off feelings of loneliness, which are common after the end of a marriage. Taking a class or joining a group can help you meet people who share a common interest. There are many options nowadays. You can take an academic class at a college, join a sports team, take a cooking or art class, or find a family-oriented class for you and the kids.
  • Exercise. Do not have time to join a gym? You do not have to. In fact, you probably want to cut costs after a divorce, not lock yourself into a pricey membership. Walking is one the best forms of exercise, and it is totally free. Walking outdoors around the neighborhood can boost your mood and get your mind off things. You do not need to spend a lot of time—just 10 minutes a day will do.
  • Find someone to talk to. You do not necessarily need to spend hundreds of dollars on a therapist, but it is nice to have someone to vent to after going through a stressful divorce. Find a lifeline who can lend an ear and help you through any tough times you will face after a divorce. A divorced friend who has been through the same situation may be helpful. A close friend or trusted family member is also a good choice.
  • Vacation alone. This can seem scary, but it is a good opportunity to do things on your own. Now that you are single, you no longer have a partner to do things with. Try exploring another state or even a different country. The goal is to take yourself out of your comfort zone. Take this opportunity to try new things.
  • Start dating again. If you are recently divorced, you may want to have some time alone to discover yourself. However, if you have gotten your life together and want to meet new people, there is no reason why you can not jump into the dating game whenever you are ready. Some people start dating right away, others wait a few months and some wait years. There is no definitive answer to how long you should wait. If you are ready for a new relationship, try online dating. Even if you do not meet “The One” right away, at least you will have fun and get your mind off the divorce.
